Kuala Kangsar

WHAT IS KUALA KANGSAR

The capital of Perak, Malaysia, is Kuala Kangsar, also known as "Kole Kangso" in Perak. It is situated at the point where the River Perak River joins the Kangsar River, downstream from Ipoh, the capital of Perak, and 98 kilometres southeast of George Town, Penang. It serves as the centre of government for Kuala Kangsar's administrative district. From Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur, it is 235 kilometres away.

HISTORY

Sultan Yusuf Sharifuddin Mudzaffar Shah of Perak, who ruled from 1877 to 1887, must have experienced an unusual reaction to the place. The Sultan had his first royal residence constructed next to the riverbed, in contrast to many other kings who secured their castles and royal palaces by carefully choosing their vantage locations where they could see approaching enemies from a distance. Then he gave it the name "Istana Sri Sayong".

The ferocity of monsoon seasons, which caused many flooding as water flowed down from the jungles above through the various streams, was another issue, in addition to being exposed to the imminent prospect of invasion.

Kuala Kurang-Sa, which literally translates to "100 minus one", is thought to be the source of the name Kuala Kangsar, which is typically translated as "the 99th tiny tributary to flow into the Perak River".
