Gopeng

HISTORY

In Mukim Teja, Kampar District, Perak, Malaysia, there is a town by the name of Gopeng. It is located around 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of the state capital of Ipoh. Up until 1890, when Ipoh rose to prominence, Gopeng was the most significant town in the Kinta Valley.

Chinese miners, who were heavily represented by Hakka workers under Chung Keng Kwee, the head of the Hai San secret society during the Larut War, mined Gopeng extensively. He was appointed as the Kapitan Cina following the Pangkor Treaty, and although having primary residences in Taiping and Penang, he continued to have a presence in Gopeng. He won contracts for street lighting there in 1892 and built government servant housing there afterward. Gopeng was governed by a triumvirate for the first few decades following British intervention; the Europeans, the Chinese led by the Eu family, and the Sumatrans under Assistant Penghulu Imam Prang Ja Barumun.

Additionally, Gopeng was among the first locations in the 19th century when a significant portion of Orang Asli met outsiders. The North-South Expressway section of Tapah-Simpang Pulai passes through Gopeng on the west side. One of the most picturesque sections of the Tapah-Gopeng length on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the highway passes through the limestone hills and the Titiwangsa range.

For motorists travelling north to Gopeng, the Lata Kinjang waterfall might be viewed on clear days on the right side of the roadway.
