Teluk Intan

WHAT IS TELUK INTAN

In the Malaysian state of Perak, there is a town by the name of Teluk Intan. It is the district seat, the main town in the Hilir Perak district, and the third-largest town in the state of Perak, with an estimated population of over 120,000, or roughly half of the entire population of the Hilir Perak district (232,900).

The town's original name was Teluk Mak Intan, after a female trader from the Mandailing tribe. Between 1528 to 1877, when Kuala Kangsar was proclaimed the royal town, the Perak kings and queens conducted court here.

The name was changed to Teluk Anson (Anson Bay) during the British protectorate period in honour of Major-General Sir Archibald Edward Harbord Anson, a British commander who served as Penang's last lieutenant-governor and created the present township's plan in 1882.

The name of the town was once more changed to Teluk Intan (Diamond Bay) by the Sultan of Perak in 1982, in honour of the town's establishment's 100th anniversary. One of the top sights in the city is the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan. The town contains a mix of colonial and Chinese shophouses, as well as modern structures, a few retail centres, and a modern movie theatre.
